Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 110:

Cullen, Hugh, Irish
Pastor in Kurri Kurri, Maitland Diocese

Both Cullens, Hugh and Patrick, are described as very kindly men. It's presumed they were brothers, and if this is correct they were born in Killaloe, County Clare, the parents being Simon and Bridget Sheridan. At least All Hallows Records reveal these facts about Patrick. Hugh studied at St. Kyran's, Kilkenny and was ordained on 1 July 1894. He had few appointments: assistant to Frs. Reginald Finn and Joseph O'Donohue at Hamilton for over ten years, assistant at Cessnock for five years, and pastor of the coal mining centre at Kurri Kurri from 1910 to life's end in 1925. With only church-schools at Kurri Kurri and Abermain to cater for the people's needs life as a Pastor was anything but easy. He died at the Mater Hospital, Waratah, on 22 February 1925, seemingly in his mid fifties.
