Biographical Notes

Prayer Calendar: Deceased Priests who have ministered the Catholic Faith throughout Toowoomba and districts, 1864–2025, Compiled by Annie Carrett, Diocesan Archivist, 2001, Updated by Gabrielle Saide, Diocesan Archivist, 2023:
Rev James Leo (Leo) O'Donohue, died 26 Apr 1961

Born on 15th July, 1903, at Kangaroo Point in Brisbane, to John and Anne O'Donohue (nee Carmody). His early schooling was at St Joseph's, Kangaroo Point and St Laurence's, South Brisbane. His Seminary training was at Manly and he was ordained at St Mary's, Ipswich on 21st December, 1927, by His Grace Archbishop Duhig. After his ordination he was presented with a chalice, having the distinction of being the first priest ordained from St Laurence's. His first appointment was in 1928 to Goondiwindi, followed in 1930 by Stanthorpe and then as Chaplain to St Vincent's Hospital in 1933 and 1934. Clifton was his next assignment in 1934, then Cunnamulla in 1936, Millmerran in 1938 and Jandowae in 1948. It appears that the appointment in 1948 was a clean swap with Fr Schuhkraft - as it lasted for 13 years it must have been approved by Bishop Roper. Fr O'Donohue was a difficult and moody man, shy and with few friends. Many young priests feared his gruff and silent manner. He died in the Mater Hospital in Brisbane following an operation. It was only after his death that it was revealed that he had suffered very bad health for quite a long time. He is buried in the Toowoomba/Drayton Cemetery.
