Biographical Notes

Fr David Strong SJ, The Australian dictionary of Jesuit biography 1848-2015, Second Edition, 2017:
Herden, Julius

Missionary, pastor; born Reichenstein, Prussian Silesia, 15 May 1833; died Sevenhill, South Australia, 8 April 1898, aged 64.

Julius Herden was educated at the gymnasium at Neisse, studied theology at the University of Breslau, and was ordained priest in 1857. On 7 December 1864, he entered the Jesuit noviciate at Trynau, completed two years of theology at Innsbruck, made his tertianship at Prague, and then went to the house of missions at Steyr. For three years he gave missions, and then, in January 1873, he was transferred to the Vienna residence, engaging in pastoral work.

In November 1876 he was sent to the Australian mission, and worked there for 20 years. He worked from Sevenhill, being pastor of the Clare region, building the Church of St Michael, and caring for the people of the region. He was professed of the four vows in 1878.

In 1883 he was appointed superior of the mission, residing at the parish of Norwood. Then he was appointed superior at Sevenhill in 1886, and held this office until his death. He died suddenly after the Good Friday ceremonies. He was remembered for his zeal and sound administration, for the conviction of his preaching, and for being a loyal, upright and lovable priest. He was buried in the crypt at Sevenhill.
