Biographical Notes

Fr Denis W. Martin, Priests of 1928, Brisbane, 2003, p 109:
William Howes

After learning that he was born in Terrace St, New Farm, details about William Joseph Howes are sketchy. He was educated at St James and Gregory Terrace, then apparently decided to enter the Redemptorist Order.

He 'gave missions extensively in Ireland, New South Wales, and Queensland, then from Tasmania joined up as an AIF Chaplain between 1915 and 1919. Although this took a toll on his health, he returned to Australia and did parish work in Carnarvon in Western Australia.

In the 1920s, Archbishop Duhig took him on for Brisbane, where he did relieving work at Wynnum etc. before he was made Parish Priest of Toogoolawah. From 1932-1933, he was Parish Priest of Hendra.

One day in November 1933, he left for Sydney on what was thought to be a holiday, but turned out to be a visit to a specialist. He never kept the appointment. He took ill on the Sydney Mail train and was rushed to hospital on arrival. He died in St Vincent's Hospital on 16th November.

It was his wish to be buried there in Sydney. A Requiem Mass was celebrated at St Stephen's where all prayed for 'the Parish Priest of Hendra who was a native of this city'.
