Biographical Notes

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
Shanahan, Bede Patrick (Pat)

Born at Coonabarabran on 23 January 1918, he was educated at De La Salle College Armidale. He then went to Rome to study for the priesthood. In Italy at the commencement of World War II he was ordained in 1941, and managed to return to Australia in 1944. His first appointment was as assistant priest at Narrabri, followed by periods at Moree, Walgett and Inverell. From 1950 to 1956 he was secretary to Bishop Doody and first rector of St Mary's Minor Seminary, Armidale. Around 1961 he spent time in Rome studying canon law. On return he was appointed parish priest, Guyra. His final appointment was as parish priest Werris Creek. A competent canon lawyer and theologian he was probably the one priest of his generation who followed, and understood the second Vatican Council. His design of the Werris Creek church remains a monument to his forward thinking. He died suddenly in Werris Creek on 27 February 1971. He is buried at Werris Creek. One sister was a Dominican nun.
