Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 105:

Cregan, Michael, Irish
Two Months Hard in Maitland Gaol

Probably Michael came from County Limerick. Certainly he was accepted for service in the Diocese of Limerick, and after matriculating on 30 August 1850, went on to study at St. Patrick's Maynooth. He was ordained deacon in 1857 and priest in 1858. Most likely he spent his first years of service in the diocese of adoption. Only two places of service can be traced in the Maitland Diocese: Branxton and East Maitland (1873-75). From that point he took to the roads. Perhaps if he had fallen in later times a rescue may have been affected. The Melbourne 'Advocate' rather brusquely reports 18.9.1877 and 22.12.1877; "Cregan was given two months with hard labour at Maitland Court for imposing on good people to satisfy his weakness for drink ..." Can any reader report a repentance and rehabilitation?
