Condon, Registrar." --- Fr Denis W. Martin, Priests of 1928, Brisbane, 2003, p 71: At a recent auction in Brisbane, a fine leather-bound volume of etchings of Irish Ruins came up. Written on the flyleaf was 'Revd. J M Humphries, Ipswich Rd Presbytery, 1928.' John had gone through Mungret Jesuit College and was ordained from St Patrick's Seminary, Thurles in 1919. He arrived in Brisbane the following year where he served in Wooloowin, Warwick, Kangaroo Point, etc. His first appointment as a Parish Priest was St Benedict's, East Brisbane, from 1933-1952. Health problems in the form of a nervous disability caused his resignation, but he soon resumed work as Parish Priest of Enoggera. Unfortunately, the problem resurfaced, so he went to Sydney for treatment where he died in St Vincent's Hospital on 16th October 1954, the fifth Brisbane priest to die that year. Requiem Mass from St Stephen's and burial at Nudgee followed. The Archbishop gave him a good send off, saying 'Fr Humphries was a most devoted priest, a man of great faith and simple habits. He did excellent work at East Brisbane. His saintly life was a constant and inspiring example to his people.' Fr Chris Hanlon was told that 'He was a thick-set Irishman with very dark hair and a brogue that was a bit difficult to understand'. (Reproduced by permission of Fr Denis Martin.) |
