Biographical Notes

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
O'Neill, James John

Born at Bally Vateen, Co Kilkenny, Ireland on 17 August 1867. He studied at St John's College, Waterford, and was ordained at St John's College on 3 July 1892 by Bishop Richard Sheehan of Waterford. He came to the diocese in 1892. His first appointment was as assistant priest, Armidale, where he became Diocesan Inspector of Schools. In 1898 he was appointed to Tamworth as assistant priest, then was appointed Administrator in 1899 following the death of Patrick Dwyer Ryan. He spent 14 years in Tamworth. His final move was to Inverell (1914), where he built a new presbytery (1916) and where he remained until he died. In his last years William Corr was appointed to Inverell as Administrator. He died on 22 July 1949 and was buried in the grounds of the church at Inverell. His remains had to be removed in later years and re-interred in the Inverell cemetery before construction could start on the new church and presbytery complex.
