Rev. M. Connaughton, O.F.M.
Rev. Mark Connaughton, O.F.M., whose death has occurred in a Dublin hospital at the age of 65, was a native of Ballinasloe. He entered the Franciscan Order in Killarney in 1911 and was ordained in Rome in 1918.

From 1921 to 1927 he was Master of Novices at the Friary at Killarney. In 1927 he was appointed Guardian at Waterford. During his term as Guardian the present friary and church were completed.

On leaving Waterford he went to the U.S. on mission work, going later to Australia. He returned to Ireland in 1945 and spent some time in Waterford before being transferred to Clonmel.

Well known as a preacher and retreat master, Father Mark was also an outstanding administrator. His brother, Rev Maurice Connaughton, O.F.M., organised the Irish Franciscan Mission In China and was appointed Prefect Apostolic. He was expelled by the Communists in April, 1951.
