Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005: Born in Tamworth 1878, educated by the Sisters of Mercy, Narrabri, then at St Joseph's College, Hunter's Hill. After some time in the work force as a postal employee and in a newspaper business he studied at St Patrick's College, Manly, and was ordained with Joseph O'Hanlin on 19 December 1903 at Armidale by Bishop P J O'Connor. His first appointment was to the cathedral, then to Moree, where he was parish priest for 20 years 1906-1926. He enjoyed an overseas trip to Europe in 1914. He started a boxing club that was popular with the Aboriginal community in Moree. Following the shooting death of the Mayor of Moree it was discovered that his (Lloyd's) name was on the killer's list of people to murder. He quickly transferred to the Archdiocese of Sydney, and was appointed as assistant priest, Newtown. In 1933 he was made Administrator at Cronulla and a year later parish priest, where he saw the arrival of the De La Salle Brothers. In 1938 he became parish priest Lidcombe, where he remained until his death. He was created a Privy Chamberlain (Monsignor) in 1958. He worked to establish the Catholic Workmen's Club, Lidcombe, and a local credit union. He also continued work with young boys and men through boxing clubs. He died on 21 February 1963 in Lewisham hospital Sydney, and was buried at Rookwood. (Reproduced by permission of Tom Campbell.) |
