Biographical Notes

Fr Denis W. Martin, Priests of 1928, Brisbane, 2003, pp 76-77:
James Concannon

Looking the perfect priest is Fr James Concannon, the second oldest of the four Concannon brother priests. Their father Tom was one of the Irish police constables who was so mightily impressed when Fr Corrigan strutted past.

James William Concannon was born in Brisbane, educated in Toowoomba, went through Springwood and Manly, and was then ordained in St Patrick's Church, Toowoomba, in December 1925. Of this remarkable family who gave four sons to the priesthood, like the Murphys of Warwick, James was the only one to remain in the Brisbane Archdiocese after 1929. He was appointed first to Ipswich and then Annerley before becoming Parish Priest of Graceville [1934-35]. Other placements were Parish Priest of Helidon, Kingaroy [1941-50], and finally Bulimba [1951-63].

Death came on 7th March 1963, followed by burial at Nudgee. Archbishop Duhig said in 'a brief but touching panegyric' that he remembered ordaining him in Toowoomba nearly 40 years ago. He was a valuable priest who rendered loyal and remarkable service as a zealous pastor.

The other Concannons, all of the Toowoomba Diocese, were -
John, ordained in Toowoomba in 1920, died 28.4.1937;
Thomas, ordained in Toowoomba in 1930, died 1.1.1948; and
Edward, ordained in Brisbane's St Stephen's Cathedral in 1932. 'Eddy' became Monsignor and Vicar-General of Toowoomba Diocese. He died on 17th May 1987.

One fact the Concannons had in common was that all four went through St Patrick's College at Manly.

Prayer Calendar: Deceased Priests who have ministered the Catholic Faith throughout Toowoomba and districts, 1864–2025, Compiled by Annie Carrett, Diocesan Archivist, 2001, Updated by Gabrielle Saide, Diocesan Archivist, 2023:
Rev James Concannon, died 7 Mar 1963

Born on 14th January, 1903, to Thomas and Catherine Concannon. James was the second of the four brothers to be ordained. As with his other brothers, he attended St Mary's CBC, Toowoomba, and continued with his studies at St Columba's, Springwood and St Patrick's Seminary, Manly. This took place on 8th December, 1925 in St Patrick's Church, Toowoomba, by Archbishop Duhig. His first appointments were at Gayndah (1925-26); Ipswich (1926-27) and Annerley (1927-34). He was appointed Parish Priest of Graceville in 1934 and remained there until 1935. He was Assistant Priest at Ipswich (1935-38) and followed as Parish Priest of Helidon (1938-41) and Kingaroy (1941-52), before becoming Parish Priest of Bulimba, where he remained until his death. He is buried in Nudgee under the listing of William.
