Byrne, Gerald (Sen.), Irish
Builder at Williamstown, Melbourne

Gerald Byrne was a hardy warrior who endured many hardships, especially during his time in Gippsland in the 1870s. He came from County Clare, studied at All Hallows, and was ordained by Cardinal Cullen on 24.6.1865. He arrived in Melbourne on the 'Champion of the Seas' on November 2. Places of service: South Melbourne, North Melbourne, Essendon, St. Kilda, Sale, Tarraville (living for a time at Stratford), Meredith (3 years), Gordon, Keilor-Essendon 1885-7. While Pastor at Williamstown he built a part of the present church, and churches at Newport and Werribee. Influenza gripped him seriously in 1898. After recovery parishioners arranged for him to take an interstate trip. He returned from Sydney apparently in good health, but a few days after his return suffered a fatal heart seizure. Date of death was 27.11.1898, and the age 61. Burial took place in the Mortuary Chapel of the Melbourne General Cemetery.
