Patrick Laffan, St. C...n's, Essendon has received a cable from Ireland announcing the sudden death of his brother, Rev. Lawrence Laffan, C.M., Ashfield, Sydney. Only in March Fr. Laffan, C.M., sailed from Melbourne to attend the Eucharistic Congress in Dublin, travelling through the Holy Land, Lourdes and Rome. He had arrived in Ireland only a few days when he died suddenly from heart failure at Cahir, County Tipperary, about 25 miles from his home, at the early age of ... The late Fr. Laffan was born at Borrisoleigh, County Tipperary, Ireland. He began his student days at Castleknock College, Dublin, and completed his studies for the priesthood at St. Joseph's College, Blackrock, Dublin. On October 3, 1910, he was ordained at St. Patrick's College, Thurles, by his cousin, the late Archbishop of Cashel, Most Rev. Thomas Fennelly, D.D. In 1911 Fr. Laffan joined the staff of Castleknock College, and in 1914 he was appointed a professor and Dean of All Hallows College, Dublin. Towards the close of 1916, in response to an urgent appeal for priests to attend to the Catholic soldiers at the front, he became an army chaplain, serving first in France and later in Palestine. Returning from the war he resumed his duties at All Hallows College until he was appointed professor of theology at the newly established Vincentian Novitiate at Eastwood, Sydney, in 1922. A few years ago he was transferred to the mission staff at Ashfield, Sydney, and has since given many missions and retreats throughout New South Wales. The news of his sudden death will be a great shock to all who knew him. To his brother, Fr. Patrick Laffan, Essendon, to his aged father and mother, to his brothers and sisters in Ireland we offer our deepest sympathy in their great sorrow.
