Manzoni, Vincent (Fr Cherubim, or Fr Cherubini) (OSFC)

Born Vincent Manzoni at Castel San Pietro Terme, Italy on 22 January 1831 he entered the novitiate of the Capuchin Province of Bologna at Cesena on 8 September 1847. He was professed the following year. He was ordained at Imola on 12 January 1854. In 1861 he was sent to Ireland to assist in re-establishing the Irish Province. Three years later he returned to his Province of Bologna but was assigned to Ireland once more in 1865, where he served as Guardian of Cork (1865 to 1873). Before the Cork assignment he had been Guardian at Kilkenny and was also appointed Guardian at Pantasaph, involved in protests by an Irish priest to the Ministers General that Irish priests did not want a foreign superior. In 1873, when England became an independent province and was raised to the status of a General Commissariate he was appointed the first Provincial, then remained in England for a short time following the expiry of his three-year term of office, finally returning to his Province because of ill health in 1876 after resigning as Guardian at Pantasaph. He accompanied Bishop Elzear Torreggiani to Australia in 1879, was appointed Vicar General of the diocese, and remained in the diocese until 1891. His first appointment was at Inverell, in March 1880, accompanied by John Paul Pederzoli, also a member of Bologna Province, and Capuchin Lay Brother, Brother Lawrence who collected funds from door to door to assist the construction of the new school being prepared for the arrival of the Sisters of St Joseph. Bro Lawrence (Giuseppe Manzini) was Manzoni's natural brother. He moved to Glen Innes in 1886 and was Vicar General at the second Diocesan Synod in 1888. His popularity at Glen Innes was such that that when it was suggested he relinquish his post because of ill health a deputation approached Torreggiani to make no such move. In 1889 Albert Mitchell replaced Manzoni. In June 1891 he retired to Bologna accompanied by Brother Lawrence, but took up other duties, becoming Vicar at Castel S. Pietro 1891-92, 1902-05, Guardian at Cento 1892-1894, 1898-1899, at Ferrara 1894-96, at Bologna 1896-1898,1899-1902 and Definitor 1893-1899. He was living in the fraternity at Bologna when he died on 28 October 1906. He is buried in the Capuchin plot at Bologna.
