Biographical Notes

Prayer Calendar: Deceased Priests who have ministered the Catholic Faith throughout Toowoomba and districts, 1864–2025, Compiled by Annie Carrett, Diocesan Archivist, 2001, Updated by Gabrielle Saide, Diocesan Archivist, 2023:
Rev Simon Joseph O'Dea, died 6 July 1975

Simon Joseph O'Dea was born on 14th November, 1897, at Pechey, to Simon and Margaret O'Dea (nee Boland). He had two brothers and a sister. He attended Pittsworth State School and Nudgee College. On leaving school he became a bank teller before embarking on Seminary studies. He graduated from Springwood and Manly Seminaries and was ordained in St Patrick's, Toowoomba, on 8th December, 1930, by Bishop Byrne. He was based at St Patrick's Cathedral from 1931-34 and had short periods in Oakey and Pittsworth. Then followed Chinchilla (1935-40); the Cathedral, where he was in charge of finance for 4 years; Charleville (1940-41); the first Parish Priest of Augathella (1942-59), where he lived for some years in a disused butcher's shop before he built the Church and Presbytery in 1949. His last appointment was in Roma (1960-73). From Roma, he went to live with his sister, Alice, at Woody Point. His personal appreciation of the ability to handle money never left him. He died in Mt Olivet Hospital, Brisbane and is buried in the Toowoomba/Drayton Cemetery.
