Biographical Notes

Obituary. Father Roger P. Burke, Toowoomba Chronicle and Darling Downs Gazette, 21 October 1948, p 3, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article287355215:

The death occurred yesterday in Stanthorpe of Father Roger Patrick Burke, who for the past eleven years has been parish priest of Stanthorpe. Father Burke was a native of Gowrie Junction, where his family is well known and highly respected. He was educated at the Christian Brothers' College in Toowoomba and proceeded thence to the Ecclesiastical Seminaries at Springwood and Manly, New South Wales. He was ordained to the priesthood in Sydney in November, 1922. He was stationed first at Kangaroo Point, Brisbane, and afterwards for five years was assistant priest in Charleville. He was parish priest of Pittsworth for the ten years prior to 1937, and was then transferred to Stanthorpe, where he remained until his death. Father Burke had been in indifferent health for the past few years, but with two assistant priests he carried on his duties as pastor of the important parish in the Granite Belt. Only last November he celebrated the silver jubilee of his ordination, when many fine encomiums were written and spoken concerning him by all sections of the Stanthorpe community. His early demise at the age of 48 is a grave loss to the diocese of Toowoomba. Pontifical requiem mass for the repose of his soul will be celebrated by Bishop Roper in Stanthorpe at 10 o'clock to-morrow morning. After the mass the funeral will leave St. Joseph's Church for the Stanthorpe Cemetery.
