Victoria, Ovens and Murray Advertiser, Beechworth, 7 September 1867, p 2, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article198656362: (From our own correspondent.) --- Death of the Rev. P. Moore, The Ballarat Star, 24 May 1880, p 2, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article202511722: It is with feelings of deep regret we have to announce the death of the Rev. P. Moore, Roman Catholic pastor of Smythesdale, and brother to Dean Moore, the vicar-general, which melancholy event took place at that town on Saturday morning at 4 o’clock. "In the midst of life we are in death." Yesterday three weeks Father Moore in the fulness of his strength and mental faculties was laboring in the vineyard of the Lord, and now he is no more. It will be remembered that there was a storm of rain and wind during the whole of that day. Father Moore, notwithstanding the inclemency of the weather, had to proceed to Rokewood and two other outlying places to celebrate mass. In the course of his journey he caught a cold, which he, being of a robust constitution, thought little of. After a few days he called in Dr Stewart, who also did not anticipate any serious consequences therefrom. The complaint, however, assuming a malignant form, the doctor recommended that other medical advice should be procured, when Drs Hudson and Owen were at once called in, but their united skill was of no avail. The cold had turned into diarrhoea, and inflammation of the bowels supervened, which was the immediate cause of death. So serious had Father Moore’s illness become that the bishop and some of the clergymen went out to Smythesdale on Friday evening. Knowing that his end was approaching, and seeing the bishop and clergy around him, he expressed a desire to receive the last sacraments, which were administered by Father Cleary, who, with Dean Moore, had been attending him. Having received the Apostolic Benediction from the bishop, the good priest “slept in the Lord.” Thus he died, while discharging his duties in a self-sacrificing spirit. By his death, at the early age of forty-one, his flock have lost a devoted priest, his brother clergymen a sincere and faithful friend, and his bishop an obedient and zealous priest. Father Moore although comparatively a young man, had labored zealously as a priest for the last seventeen years, being at one time placed in charge of the Castlemaine mission. Since the arrival of Dr O’Connor, however he had been officiating in his lordship’s diocese, his last mission being, as we have seen, Smythesdale. Since his appointment to that important charge he had, through his zeal, erected several churches, besides establishing two Catholic schools. To those who desire to pay the last tribute of respect to the good priest, we are requested to say that his remains will be brought to St. Patrick’s Cathedral early this morning, and will be laid under a catafalco, erected in front of the high altar. Solemn requiem high mass to commence at 11 o’clock, will be celebrated by the bishop. After the solemn absolution has been pronounced by his lordship the remains will be removed from the church, and will then proceed in funeral procession to the Ballarat Old Cemetery. A large number of the clergy of both the diocese and the archdiocese are expected to be present. --- VIC BDM Index: Patrick Dunne Moore, age 41, parents Alice and Pat. |
