Dr. Dwyer, Bishop of Maitland. Amongst the clergy present were the Right Rev. Monsignor O'Reilly (New Zealand), the Right Rev. Monsignor Meagher, V.D. (Singleton), besides a large number of priests of the diocese of Maitland. At the conclusion of the interesting ceremony the congregation received the blessing of the newly-ordained priests, of whom a third brother is the Rev. Joseph Kelly, of Hamilton. The mother and a large number of relatives and friends of the young priests attended the ordination, and were afterwards entertained at dinner at Moore's Royal Hotel. --- Rev. J. Kelly Drowned, The Cumberland Argus and Fruitgrowers Advocate, Parramatta, 14 February 1912, p 2, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article86138163: Father James Kelly, assistant priest at Singleton, was drowned at Noble's Crossing, Gnennie's Creek, on Sunday morning while on his way to celebrate Mass. The creek came down quickly, and the crossing, always dangerous, was rendered doubly so. The priest drove into 7 or 8 feet of water. As he failed to turn up at the church at the appointed hour, the people went home. A couple of hours later two men, who were going fishing, found the horse and sulky some 300 yards from the crossing, around the bend in the creek. The animal was alive. The alarm was given, and a telephone message was sent to the Singleton police. Monsignor Meagher and several civilians went out. Deceased came from Taree early this year, exchanging places with his brother, Rev. Joseph Kelly. He was a native of Hamilton, about 33 years of age. He was ordained at West Maitland Cathedral on December 8, 1910. |
