Long, Pioneer and Early Priests, Archdiocese of Brisbane, Deceased or retired by 1929, 2021, p 38: The committee of the Sick and Infirm Priests' Sustentation Society included Fr O'Hanlon in their memorial list of deceased priests who had served in the Archdiocese. Fr O'Hanlon died in Charleville and was buried there. Toowoomba Archives, in their prayer calendar of deceased priests, records: Fr Joseph O'Hanlon was born in Ireland. Served in Maitland, Corowa and Queensland. Died in Charleville aged 29 [sic]. His grave and tombstone are on its own on the eastern side of the Charleville cemetery.(1) Even though he spent a short time in the diocese he was remembered by Fr Philip Corrigan who served in Charleville from about 1890 to 1896. It is likely that Fr O'Hanlon came here because of chest problems. Was he was an Irish contemporary of Fr Corrigan? Fr O'Hanlon died in Charleville on 9 October 1893. His death certificate does not have the name of his parents, but states that he was 35 years of age at the time of his death.(2) A Charleville correspondent of country news to the Queenslander in Brisbane on October 30 1893 wrote: The Catholic ladies of the town and district have presented a testimonial to the nurse who attended Father O'Hanlon in his last sickness, in acknowledgement of her untiring care and patience. The testimonial was accompanied by a purse of sovereigns.(3) Footnotes Reproduced by permission of Fr Denis Long. |
