Thomas was the grandson of Irish immigrants who had settled in the Swan Creek district, he was also a nephew of the four Murphy Priests who served in the Diocese in the 1930s and 40s. One of a family of ten, he attended Swan Creek State School. After Scholarship he went to Pius XII, Banyo, to study for the priesthood where he was one of the original students, and he was ordained on 29th June, 1951 in Warwick, by Bishop Roper. His first appointment was Stanthorpe (1952-60) followed by Holy Name (1960-67); St Patrick's Cathedral (1967), with relieving work at Chinchilla, Crows Nest and Pittsworth; Harlaxton (1970) and Inglewood as PP (1971-88) until the time of his death in 1988 - he was completely dedicated to the people there. After a concelebrated Requiem Mass held in St Patrick's Cathedral attended by many priests, relatives and parishioners from Inglewood, including the children from St Joseph's Parish School, Fr Murphy was buried in the Toowoomba Lawn Cemetery. A quiet, shy man, he did excellent work with YCW Groups and organised many youth concerts which were held in the City Hall. He is remembered for his deep faith and outstanding hospitality. He was a very gifted man with music and drama - all self taught. He was a simple man who had a great compassion for his people. Reproduced by permission of Bishop Ken Howell. |
