Biographical Notes

Secessions from the Church of England, The Age, Melbourne, 5 January 1856, p 3, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article154866530:

Cardinal Wiseman held an ordination on Sunday last, when he admitted two clergymen of the Church of England into the priesthood of the Church of Rome, namely, the Rev. William John Roberts, M.A., of Merton College, Oxford, and the Rev. John Hilary Dale, M.A., of Christ Church, Oxford, and lately a missionary of the Established Church in the diocese of New Zealand. Mr. Dale has been appointed priest of the new chapel of the "Angel Guardians," at Holloway, in connection with the missionary rectorate at Holloway.

The Age, Melbourne, 18 September 1860, p 5, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article154885167:

A lecture on "Native and European Life in New Zealand" was delivered yesterday evening by the Rev. Mr. Dale at St. Patrick's Hall. There were about eighty persons present, and the lecture, which was a very interesting one, full details being given of the life in New Zealand, the character of the country and inhabitants, &c., was most attentively listened to throughout.

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, pp 121-122:
Dale, John, D.D. Involved in Melbourne Controversies of the 1860s
English

At the time of writing information was being sought from the Archives of Westminster. Hence future issues of 'Footprints' may carry further details of the man. He appears to have been associated with the Benedictines in England, either in attempting to join the Order or in some other way, before his arrival in Melbourne in the mid 1860s. Records at the Registry Office, Queen St., Melbourne, indicate that he was registered as a celebrant on 4 June 1860 and that his name was removed from the list on 13 March 1861. From August to November in 1860 he was chaplain to the convict hulks at Williamstown. Through his lectures on the Papacy and on other Catholic subjects at St. Francis' he called down on his head the wrath of the bigoted and biassed Melbourne 'Age' of the period. This part of his activity during the nine months stay has been scrutinised by Margaret Pawsey and recorded in 'Footprints', Vol. 3 No. 3.

A Prayer-Calendar of Deceased Priests & Deacons in Australia 1788-2009, compiled by W.T. Southerwood, Sixth Edition, 2009, p 99: "John H. Dale, Melbourne diocese, died 6 August 1860." [ANZCC note: obviously a mistaken date in light of 18 September 1860 above. The date of death shown by Southerwood has probably been confused with the date of death of Rev. Bernard Daley on 6 August 1860.]
