Enright, of Beaudesert, and had been ailing for some time, so that his demise was not altogether unex- pected. He was 58 years of age, and spent many years of a very useful life in the West in the service of the Church, but of late years he was stationed at Wynnum. The funeral will take place this morning to the Tullymore Cemetery at Gleneagle. --- A Prayer-Calendar of Deceased Priests & Deacons in Australia 1788-2009, compiled by W.T. He was appointed as Curate to Ipswich that year and remained there with Fr Horan for four years. He relieved Fr Jerome Davadi for 9 months in Stanthorpe. He then served in the bush for 13 years, Blackall District: Springsure, Tambo, Isisford, Windorah and Cooper's Creek. The last took a month's hard ride, 300 miles from Blackall – in good weather. He built a church for £800 at Blackall. His final appointment was Wynnum. He retired to Beaudesert where he lived at his brother's presbytery. He died on 18th December 1918 and is buried in Beaudesert Cemetery. Reproduced by permission of Bishop Ken Howell. --- Denis M. Long, Pioneer and Early Priests, Archdiocese of Brisbane, Deceased or retired by 1929, 2021, p 59: Thomas Enright was born at Loughill in co Limerick Ireland the son of Patrick and Mary (nee Cummane) Enright on 2 June 1860. In 1878 he entered All Hallows Missionary College from Mr Guinan's school in Shanagolden. With Fr Michael john Barry he was ordained a priest at All Hallows for the diocese of Brisbane on 24 June 1883.(1) They arrived in Sydney aboard the Chimborozo on 28 October 1883. His first appointment in the Archdiocese was as curate at Ipswich where he remained for four years. In 1888 he spent nine months as administrator of the Stanthorpe while Fr Davadi was in Italy. By 1890 he was posted to Blackall where he remained for thirteen years. This most extensive parish in southern Queensland, he covered Blackall, Springsure, Tambo, Isisford, Windorah and Cooper Creek. His visits to Cooper Creek took one month. He would visit all catholic people in the 300 miles from Blackall to Cooper creek. He travelled on horse-back as most of the roads were impassable for buggies in wet weather. There is one report of his crossing the Barcoo River with his pack horse, "a risky proceeding as all bush-men know." (2) In his time at Blackall he built a fine church and presbytery at a cost of £800. In 1904 Fr Enright moved to Wynnum/Cleveland as the first parish priest-in-charge of Guardian Angels parish. On the two acres of land purchased by Archbishop Dunne Fr Enright built a church and presbytery. On 4 October 1914 he opened a school; and a fine convent on 8 August 1915.(3) In 1919, suffering from a long and painful illness, he went to live in the Beaudesert presbytery where his brother James had been parish priest since 1885. Two other brothers and a sister who had migrated from Ireland settled in that district. Fr Thomas died in the Beaudesert presbytery early on Thursday 14 December 1919. Archbishop Duhig presided and preached at the funeral rites on Friday 15 December in St Mary's Church at Beaudesert. Fr O'Flynn was the celebrant of the Requiem High Mass. Fr Denis Ahern was the deacon and Fr John K O'Brien of Boonah the sub-deacon. Fr Maurice Lane, the administrator of the Cathedral, was master of ceremonies. Fr James Enright assisted the Archbishop at the throne.(4) The chief mourners were his brothers, Fr James and Michael and Daniel, and his sister Mrs James Cahill and their families. Following the Mass and funeral rites his remains were taken to the Tullamore cemetery at Gleneagle for burial. Over the years his priest brother, James, and many Enright relatives have been laid to rest in that cemetery. Footnotes Reproduced by permission of Fr Denis Long. |
