Peter Gabriel, of St. Columban's Mission Society—R.I.P., Advocate, Melbourne, 21 July 1938, p 9, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article172024277: After a lengthy illness, Rev. Peter Gabriel, of St. Columban's Mission Society, died in Adelaide last Thursday. Fr. Gabriel, who was 49, was born in Melbourne, but grew up in South Australia. The eldest of a large family of Syrian parentage, he was compelled, by the death of his father, to postpone his cherished dream of the priesthood. When several years of devoted work had secured the family's position, he turned his eyes to China. Ordained in 1929, he gave splendid service to Bishop Galvin's Vicariate of Hanyang, Central China, until interrupted by ill-health a year ago. His return to Australia did not bring the expected return to health, but exemplary patience marked his protracted illness. Requiem Mass for the repose of his soul was said at St. Francis Xavier's Cathedral, Adelaide, on Friday last by Very Rev. Luke Mullany. His Grace the Archbishop of Adelaide, Most Rev. Dr. Killian, presided and preached the panegyric. The obsequies were attended by about thirty priests of Adelaide. The remains were brought to Melbourne, and, after a private Requiem Mass, said by Rev. Hugh Donnelly, at St. Columban's College, Essendon, the burial took place in the General Cemetery on Saturday before a large number of friends and sympathisers. Requiescat in pace. --- Not listed in either Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 1, 1979 or A Prayer-Calendar of Deceased Priests & Deacons in Australia 1788-2009, compiled by W.T.
