Collins, Edward (Edmund O.), Irish
A Lonely Grave for the Man from Bansha

In a list of Thurles ordinations received in August 1979 from the MDHC researcher at the Irish College, Rome, (Fr. John Silke), there is an Edward Collins who was born in Co. Tipperary, educated at St. Patrick's Thurles, and who was later stationed at Bansha, a parish in the County of his birth. The presumption is that this priest, probably afflicted with T.B., is identical with the one described in Footprints, Vol. 2, No. 8 under the name of Edmund O. Collins (or O'Collins), and who died at the Australia Arms Hotel in Kilmore, Vic., on 28.6.1860. ('Kilmore Free Press'). The name doesn't figure in Melbourne diocesan records. It's presumed that he was seeking a dose of Australian sunshine to ward off a T.B. condition. The late Fr. Ebsworth in an article entitled 'Among Kilmore Graves' (F.P. Vol. 2, No. 7) states that the Australia Arms was burned down in 1864 (circa) and that it was kept by an Irish family, Corboys.
