Obituary, The Argus, Melbourne, 22 September 1934, p 20, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article10983880:

There was a crowded congregation in the Church of St. Laurence, Leongatha, yesterday morning, when a solemn Requiem Mass was celebrated for the late Monsignor P. Coyne, who was parish priest at Leongatha for 33 years, and vicar-general of the Roman Catholic diocese of Sale. Archbishop Mannix, who was a contemporary of Monsignor Coyne at Maynooth College, Ireland, presided. Among others present were the Bishop of Sale (Dr. Ryan), the Bishop of Sandhurst (Dr. McCarthy), Monsignor J. Lonergan, the Rev. J. Barry, superior of the Vincentian Fathers, Malvern, and priests from the archdiocese of Melbourne and the diocese of Sale. Bishop Ryan paid a tribute to Monsignor Coyne, and Archbishop Mannix gave the final absolution at the catafalque. The burial took place in a special vault in front of the church.

Death of Monsignor Coyne. Vice-General of Diocese, Morwell Advertiser, 27 September 1934, p 4, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article71563759:

Monsignor P. J. Coyne, Parish Priest at Leongatha for the past 30 years, died at the Presbytery last week, in his 71st year, after an illness of three weeks.

He was born in the west of Ireland and was educated at Maynooth College, being a contemporary of the Archbishop of Melbourne (Dr. Mannix). He had been in the Diocese for 44 years.

He was, in 1932, made Domestic Prelate to His Holiness the Pope. He was appointed Vicar General of the Diocese by the late Bishop Phelan, and in that capacity served under the present Bishop (Dr. Ryan).

Catholic Freeman's Journal, Sydney, 27 September 1934, p 14, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article146412078:

One of the most notable ecclesiastics in Victoria, the Right Rev. Monsignor Peter Coyne, V.G., died at Leongatha (Vic.), last Wednesday week after a comparatively brief illness. He joined the Diocese of Sale 43 years ago, and worked in Gippsland in the pioneering stage under the late Bishop Corbett. He was appointed first pastor of Leongatha 33 years ago, and during his pastorate he has erected no less than seven churches. He was appointed Dean and Vicar-General of the Diocese of Sale by the late Bishop Phelan, and in the capacity of Vicar-Capitular he governed the diocese after the death of Bishop Phelan until the appointment of the present Bishop of Sale, Dr. Ryan. By a Papal Brief of May, 1932, he was created a Domestic Prelate to His Holiness. Regarded as the Grand Old Man of Gippsland and the father of his people, Mgr. Coyne's passing will leave a void which it will be difficult to fill in the life of the Church in Victoria.

Coyne, Peter J., Rt. Rev., V.G., Irish
Opened Annual Church Ball by Waltzing the Leading Lady

No. 1430 on the list of Maynooth Students and Ordinations 1795-1895, published in the Irish Ecclesiastical Record (March 1968) tells that Peter Coyne matriculated on 6.9.1884, that he commenced his studies for the Archdiocese of Tuam in the Rhetoric Class, and that he was ordained on 24 June 1890. From other sources we know that he was a County Mayo native. Of his family we only know what was reported in the Melbourne Advocate that his mother died in June 1913. Prior to going to Maynooth he attended the Waterford Seminary for a short period. Either by letter or by interview Bishop Francis Corbett induced him to come to the Sale Diocese where in the early 1890s there was only a staff of five priests. So when Peter arrived on the 'Oruya' on 26 September 1890 he became No. 6. Sale Cathedral and Bairnsdale were his first assignments. After the tragic death of Fr. Thomas Egan at Warragul due to exhaustion after a long ride to Jethro in October 1888, Bishop Corbett had no replacement to send. After a time he sent his curate of a few years experience. Warragul of the 1890s appears to have embraced an area in which today there are several parishes: Warragul, Trafalgar, Drouin, Yarragon β€” not to mention the many that have mushroomed in recent years due to coal-electricity development. In the 1899 Directory Leongatha is listed as one of Warragul's out stations. One can visualise the immense difficulties of travel that Father Peter experienced in his first pastorate, extending over nine years. In 1901 the Leongatha mission was separated from Warragul, so Peter was given the new assignment in the far south of the diocese. And it was there that he was to stay for 33 years, building up his reputation and standing in a prosperous farming community. Regarded as the Patriarch of the district, no one took exception if he did choose to open the annual Catholic Ball by waltzing down the hall with a leading lady, presumably finding justification in the words of the song devoted to Father O'Flynn: Why should the gaiety be left to the lai-ety? Coyne was a great priest despite the gaiety, and left an impressive building record to show it. New churches at Leongatha itself, Meeynihan, Yarragon, Fish Creek, Inverloch. A presbytery, convent, schools β€” and probably many other items that have escaped attention. He was given monsignorial robes in May 1932. This would have greatly amused his close friend, writer, and poet β€” Father J.J. Malone of Ashby, Geelong, whose sermon preached at the Months Mind for the Monsignor is a piece of oratory worth reflecting on. Death came his way when he had reached three score and ten, on 19 September 1934, and his remains were interred in the Leongatha churchyard. Strangely in the Sale Diocese of today there is only one priest on active duty who was in the Diocese when Peter Coyne died, a successor (among others) in the parish that Coyne himself pioneered, Monsignor John Cunningham.
