Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 90:

Cosgrove, Thomas Joseph, Irish
Inspector of Schools, Adelaide

Archbishop Reynolds was fortunate in choosing scholarly young men to study at Propaganda College, Rome, but less fortunate so far as their term of office was concerned. Cosgrove (or Cosgrave as it sometimes is written) was a class-mate of J.A. Cornes, and like him, a man of attainments and generous. Born in Dublin, he was ordained with Cornes from Propaganda on 1 November 1890, the ordaining prelate being Cardinal Parocchi, Vicar General in Rome. Both arrived in late 1891 and were posted as assistants to the Cathedral staff, under the careful scrutiny of the Archbishop himself and Archpriest Nevin. He was given the assignment of Inspector of Schools, and about 1900 was appointed as Pastor of Willunga. Probably he came to know the people well, even in the distant parts of the diocese. When he died suddenly on 4 April 1902, he had been visiting friends at Mount Gambier. His remains rest in the cemetery there, under a tombstone recording the age of 33. (The reading, I think, should be 34).
