Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 93:

Coue, Jean Baptiste, S.M., French
For Many Years on the Sydney Marist Mission

A fair proportion of the Marists on this list were passers-by on their way to New Zealand or the Pacific Missions. But not so Father Coue. He was born on 16 September 1845, ordained on 17 December 1870, and professed as Marist on 9 July 1872. His early labours centred on the New Caledonia Mission, and he appears to have joined the ranks of resident Marists in Sydney in the early 1880s. St. Patrick's Church Hill, St. Michael's Cumberland Street (a mission that has since disappeared to make way for the Harbour Bridge), and the main Mission headquarters at Hunters Hill, were the scenes of his priesthood labours. As far as I am aware, no eulogies, such as those paid to Fathers Monnier, Piquet, etc. have been paid to Father Coue; but we can suppose that he was a part of the zealous team of men who lived at Hunters Hill. He died on 22 January 1904 at Villa Maria, Hunters Hill, at the age of 58. Buried first at the Field of Mars cemetery, his remains were later transported to the cemetery at Villa Maria.

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
Coue, Jean Baptiste (SM)

Born 16 September 1845 in the diocese of Nancy, France, ordained 17 December 1870, professed as Marist 9 July 1872. He then was assigned to the Marist Missions in the Pacific, working in New Caledonia. He appears to have come to Sydney in the early 1880s, probably because of ill health from the tropical climate. From August 1897 to August 1898 he served at Emmaville. He died at Villa Maria, Hunter's Hill, the Marist Pacific headquarters, on 22 January 1904 and was buried at the Field of Mars cemetery, Ryde. His remains subsequently were re-interred in the Marist cemetery at Villa Maria on 10 June 1914, as also were the remains of several other deceased Marists.
