He was born in Mackay and went through Springwood and Manly for ordination in Brisbane in December of 1920. Red Hill, Toowoomba, Dalby, Mitchell and Pittsworth were some of the places in which he served. After 1929, he stayed in the Toowoomba Diocese working until 1978 when he died aged 82, on 20th November. He was the uncle of Fr Pat Dowd of the Brisbane Archdiocese. He attended Junction Park State School in Brisbane and St Mary's CBC, Toowoomba. His Seminary training was at St Columba's, Springwood and St Patrick's, Manly. He was ordained in St Patrick's Cathedral, Toowoomba, on 8th December, 1920, by Archbishop Duhig. His first appointment was at Red Hill from 1921-22, followed by; Dalby (1923-25), Coorparoo (1926); Oakey (1927-31); Mitchell, as PP (1931-39); Pittsworth as PP (1940-41 and 1945-55). He did Army War Service from 1941-45, and was based at the Bishop's House (due to ill-health). He was a perpetual pipe-smoker and a teller of boring stories. Unfortunately his not knowing 'when to leave' meant his company was quite often avoided, especially by the young priests of the 1950s and 60s. He died in 1978 and is buried in the Toowoomba/Drayton Cemetery. Reproduced by permission of Bishop Ken Howell. |
