Rev Francis Joseph McSweeney, died 27 Apr 1940

Francis Joseph McSweeney was born in Melbourne c1884. He had at least one sister. He had trouble being accepted as a candidate for the priesthood, when he was finally admitted, seminary studies were undertaken at St Patrick's, Manly. Originally he had presented himself to James Duhig as a candidate for the Diocese of Rockhampton, but on the completion of his studies he was ordained for the Brisbane Archdiocese by Archbishop Duhig in St Stephen's Cathedral, on 2nd February, 1918 (1908 according to his gravestone). He served in the following places: Assistant Priest Warwick (1919-1920); Fortitude Valley (1920-1923); Gympie (1923-1937); Administrator Fortitude Valley (1937-1940). For the last twelve months of his life he suffered indifferent health. He died in the Mater Hospital, Brisbane in 1940 and was buried in Nudgee Cemetery.
