English, John Joseph

Born 4 August 1862, Knockgraffon, Cahir, Co Tipperary, Ireland. Details of education unknown. He studied for the priesthood at Maynooth. He was ordained 24 June 1890 at Maynooth by Archbishop Walsh of Dublin for the Diocese of Armidale, where he arrived shortly afterwards. He was appointed assistant priest in the cathedral parish, Armidale. He was then appointed in 1895 as the parish priest Inverell, where he remained until 1914, with occasional assistants. His next appointments were to Wee Waa (1915-1926), Moree (1926-1935) and Manilla (1935-1938). He went to Europe for a holiday in 1924-1925. He was responsible for the construction of a church, convent and school at Inverell, and churches at Walgett, East Moree and Manilla (which new church was completed just weeks after his death). He died on 5 March 1938 at Manilla followed complications from a motor vehicle accident ten days earlier. He had a brother living in Walgett, a sister in Rockhampton, and a brother and sister living in Ireland. He was buried in the Manilla cemetery.
