Biographical Notes

Local and General News, Marlborough Express, 22 February 1868, p 3, https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/MEX18680222.2.10:

Father Seauzeau has received an assistant at this station, in the person of Father Goutenoire, who has just arrived from New Orleans, and will reside in Blenheim. The arrangement will be productive of great satisfaction to those of the Catholic persuasion, by enabling services to be held every Sunday at Blenheim, and consequently more regularly in the out-districts.

Personal Items, Press, Christchurch, 29 December 1915, p 6, https://paperspast.natlib.govt.nz/newspapers/CHP19151229.2.22:

The Very Rev. Dean Tubman, of Timaru. has received cable advice of the death of the Rev. Father John Goutenoire, S.M., who died last week at Lyons, France. The deceased priest was one of the pioneer Marist missionaries of New Zealand, and was for some years in charge of the parishes of Timaru and Waimate. Later on he was appointed chaplain of the Mount Magdala Home, Christchurch, and after doing good service there, he took up the position of Superior of the Marist Seminary at Meeanee, Hawke's Bay, which position he held for several years prior to his departure for France. The late Father Goutenoire, who was familiarly known as "Father John," was of a genial disposition, and his reminiscences of the early days of storm and stress when the Dominion was a young and strutting colony, were full of interest. Father Goutenoire was 76 years of age.
