The Horsham Times, 1 October 1889, p 2, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article72878726:

The Horsham Roman Catholic mission is about to lose the ministrations of the Rev. Father John Hogan, who for the past two years has so devotedly and energetically fulfilled his sacred duties among his flock. The reverend gentleman is severing his connection with the mission, and proposes to take a trip to the old country, and it will be the earnest wish of his parishioners and the large circle of warm friends he has made in the Wimmera that he will be long spared in health to continue the work he has so ably carried out in this section of the world. During the two years he has been here, no fewer than four new churches have been opened,., viz., Natimuk, Warracknabeal, Lillimur and Nhill, and it is only within the past few years that the large district over which he had charge and which extended from Murtoa to Serviceton has been subdivided, portion being now administered by Father Howell, lately of Horsham. Father Hogan's work has been characterised by a frank, manly and zealous tone, which will cause his absence to be very severely felt. The charge of the Horsham mission was taken over at the end of last week by the Rev. Father Joseph O'Brien, who for the past six years has been in sole charge at Clunes, and before that at Creswick. Father Barrett remains at Horsham as assistant priest.
