Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 128:

Darrich, Joseph, Irish
In Disfavour with Bishop Goold

The caption says nothing unusual. Apart from the Vicar General, Dr. John Fitzpatrick, it would be hard to find another priest servant who wasn't in bother with the Augustinian bishop during his 38 year reign. But in this case, as with a minority of others, there was good reason for not giving Darrich a place in the Diocese. He had been in bother in the Diocese of Limerick and a warning had been sent from Ireland not to give the migrant a hearing. So when he arrived in 1858 the Bishop acted accordingly. Possibly the spelling of the name is Darrig. Possibly also the education was received in Maynooth in the early forties.
