Fr. John Espagne, d 2001
Solomon Islands
He was born in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1918. He completed his secondary schooling at St. Patrick's College Wellington. He was professed in the Society at Highden in 1938 and after studies at Greenmeadows, he was ordained in 1942. He taught for a few years before arriving in the Solomon Islands in 1946. He worked in remote stations in Makira such as Wainoni Bay, and founded the mission station at Manivovo. He was also stationed in Ruavatu. He was Regional Superior for a term and also served the diocese as Vicar General. While in these capacities he worked also in the parishes of the Tanagai, the Grove and Kukum. In later years he re-trained in Canon Law and ran the Marriage Tribunal. He had a great love of the Solomon Islands and its people whom he served for 55 years. He never returned to his home Province, dying in the Solomons at the age of 83, after 63 years of Marist life.
