Biographical Notes

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
Foley, Michael

Born at Garrani, Ballyhooley, Ireland on 6 March 1880. Details of education unknown. Studied at a seminary in the south of France. Place of study unknown. Ordained in Waterford, Ireland on 29 September 1906 by Bishop P J O'Connor, who was visiting Ireland at the time as part of his ad limina visit to Rome. Arrived in the diocese in January 1907 from Ireland. His first appointment was for four years as assistant priest Armidale. He then spent four years at Bundarra as assistant priest with Joachim Guerrini. He returned to Armidale in June 1914 as Administrator, was afflicted with motor neurone disease and was obliged to retire from active duty in 1917. He continued to live in retirement at Bishop's House in Armidale. During this second lengthy time in Armidale he wrote as much as he could about the history of the diocese, helped by a Tamworth lawyer friend J R Allen who used visit Sydney regularly for his work, and who spent many of his free hours in the Mitchell Library, Sydney hunting out and transcribing things that might be of value. In 1931, when his illness made more intensive care necessary, he transferred to the Sacred Heart Hospice, Darlinghurst, Sydney, where he lived until his death on 26 July 1939. He was buried in the Armidale cemetery. His headstone, other cemetery indexes derived from that headstone, Doody, and other sources, incorrectly state his date of death as 26 July 1938.
