Biographical Notes

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
Carroll, David Joseph

Born on 2 February 1885 at Dungarvan, Co Waterford. He was ordained priest at Maynooth in June 1910, and arrived in Armidale October 1910. Bishop P J O'Connor was his great uncle, for which reason he came to the diocese. He had another priest brother in Ireland, a sister a member of the Armidale Ursuline community (Mother Patrick OSU), a married sister in Brisbane Qld, and other family members in Ireland and the USA. Fr Patrick Walsh was a cousin. He spent 15 years in Armidale as curate, then Administrator of the cathedral. During that time the new cathedral was completed and consecrated, and the orphanage constructed and opened. During that period he also oversaw the demise of Hillgrove as a significant centre. The Sisters of St Joseph withdrew from the school, which was closed because of declining numbers of students, and the Hillgrove church was removed to Ebor, where it could more usefully be used. After a holiday in Ireland in 1925 he was appointed to Quirindi for a year, then transferred to Bundarra in January 1927 as parish priest. He was next sent to West Tamworth in March 1928 to form a new parish. West Tamworth already had a church-school and convent staffed by Sisters of St Joseph, a growing population and a committed group of parishioners. He built a new church and presbytery, added a second floor to the school, and was responsible for the construction of a church at Gowrie. He died at Tamworth on 29 October 1952 and is buried in Tamworth cemetery. The headstone on his grave incorrectly gives the date of death as 25 October.
