Biographical Notes

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
Guerrini, Joachim (OSF)

Born in the Roman province of San Michele Italy, date and place unknown, he entered the Franciscan order. He studied at All Hallows seminary, Ireland, then was ordained in New York around 1860, exact date unknown. He then spent 19 years in North American parishes, especially Boston, Baltimore and New Haven. He was the first librarian at St Bonaventure's College, Alleghany NY. In 1879 he went back to Italy, only to find that his Order was almost completely suppressed. He next went to Kingborough, North Queensland in 1880 at the invitation of Dr Paul Fortini, Vicar Apostolic of North Queensland, then to Port Douglas 1886. After the arrival of the Augustinian Order to administer the North Queensland diocese he was made to feel uncomfortable, so transferred to the Armidale diocese where he was welcomed. He was appointed initially to Palmer's Island, then to Bingara in 1887, then to Bundarra, where he remained until his death. He was given the title 'Dean' by Bishop P J O'Connor in February 1907. In 1917 he was the senior priest in years of ordination in Australia, only one priest in Tasmania being his only senior in age. He had a grandiose idea of a grand church in Bundarra but was forced to reduce his plans to more realistic proportions. The windows from the old Armidale cathedral finished up in the church that eventually was built. He died in Bundarra on 7 November 1918. He was buried in Bundarra cemetery. The inscription on his grave reads "Parish priest of Bundarra 1889-1918".
