Love, Michael

Teacher, pastor, retreat director; born Bombay, 3 December 1930; died Sydney, 13 January 1994, aged 63.

Michael Love entered the Society of Jesus, Vinayalaya, Bombay, India, 20 June 1954. Juniorate followed at the same place, with philosophy at De Nobili, College, Poona, 1958-60. Regency was at Loyola School, Jamshedpur, 1960-63, and theology at De Nobili College, 1963-67. He was ordained at the Papal Athenaeum, Poona, March 1966. Tertianship immediately followed at Auriesville, USA. Then he undertook post-graduate studies at the University of Scranton, Penn, USA, in English literature, 1976-77, gaining a Master of Arts degree.

His first appointment upon his return to his province was to Loyola School, Jamshedpur, 1967-81, his last years being rector. At other times he was minister, hostel prefect, spiritual father and teacher.

His province described Love as a cheerful man, one who strongly maintained his principles. He prepared his classes well and was a fine teacher. He was a good community man and a pleasant companion. He was gifted with a clear singing voice, and was a skilled conductor of choirs. He enjoyed teaching moral science and religion. His other passion was giving retreats, and he was gifted with the talent of being a careful pastor. He was much in demand for days of recollection and retreats to religious.

He went to Australia in 1983. After one year working in the parish of Hawthorn, Victoria, 1983, Love moved to the Institute of Ignatian Spirituality, based at Canisius College, Pymble, where he remained until his death. He transferred into the Australian Province in 1984.

Love contributed a great deal to the retreat movement within the Australian province. He gave many retreats and was a wise and valued spiritual director, and a good friend to many. Leukemia brought to an end a flourishing apostolate.
