Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, pp 140-141:

Dietel, Charles, Very Rev., S.J., Austrian
Grand Service in South Australian Outback

The Jesuits who came to Sevenhill from 1849 onwards performed a mighty pioneering task, not only in the locality of Sevenhill but in the widespread areas to the north and west thereof. Heavy tasks and travelling difficulties were their lot both before and after the establishment of the Port Augusta Diocese (1887). Dietel was one such pioneer.

Born in Austria on 25th March 1844 he came on the Sevenhill scene on 16th September 1877. Among his assignments as traced from Church Directories we find him resident at Manoora (1886), Kooringa (1898) and for a brief time at Xavier College, Kew (Vic) in the late 1880s. We find him present at the opening of St. Patrick's College, Manly in 1889. After 1898 he seems to have been at the Sevenhill base until his death. This occurred on 23rd March 1905 at the age of 61.

The above information was supplied by the late Brother John ........ on the staff at Sevenhill.
