Biographical Notes

Rev. Father Gallivan, The Age, Melbourne, 10 June 1939, p 28, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article205633956:

The Rev. Father J. J. Gallivan, parish priest at Northcote, and one of the oldest priests in the archdiocese, died early yesterday morning. He was born in Listowel, Co. Kerry, Ireland, on February 8, 1856, and was ordained to the priesthood in All Hallows' College, Dublin, on June 24, 1880. He arrived in Melbourne a few months later, and had been attached to the archdiocese since. The Rev. Father Gallivan first served as a curate at Kilmore, and in 1886 he was appointed parish priest at Gisborne. Later he was in charge of Sunbury. In April, 1923, he was appointed to the charge of St. Joseph's parish, Northcote and he held that position up to the time of his death. In 1930 he was entertained by his fellow priests and parishioners to mark his golden jubilee of ordination. This morning, at 10, Solemn Office and Requiem Mass will take place in St. Joseph's Church, Northcote, and Archbishop Mannix will preside. The funeral will afterwards leave the church for the Sunbury cemetery.

Father Gallivan Buried. 100 Priests Take Part in Requiem Mass, The Sun News-Pictorial, Melbourne, 12 June 1939, p 13, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article278592238:

There was a large congregation at the funeral service of the Rev. J.J. Gallivan at St. Joseph's Church, Northcote, on Saturday morning, including nuns, members of church and parish organisations, and municipal representatives.

Archbishop Mannix presided, and 100 priests from city and country parishes chanted the Solemn Office and sang the music of the Requiem Mass. The ministers of the Mass were the Rev. Fathers P.J. Gibbons, T. Fitzpatrick. M. Tuomey and L. Moran.

Recalling that Father Gallivan had spent nearly 60 years in the ministry in the archdiocese, Archbishop Mannix said that he had loved Australia and the Australian people, and he had been charitable to a fault.

The funeral left the church for Sunbury Cemetery. The children of the parish schools, St. Joseph's troop of boy scouts, and the men of the Holy Name Society headed the procession to St. George's Road.

Alfred Allison had charge of the funeral arrangements.
