A Marist of Wide Experience
Marist historian Fr. John Hosie, again comes to the rescue in supplying basic details in respect to Alfred Deniau's career. He was born on 18 November 1836 in the Chartres Diocese and made his Marist profession on 24 September 1861. In 1865 he passed through Sydney on his way to the New Hebrides Vicariate to take up his missionary duties. Fifteen years later we find him in the Prefecture Apostolic of Fiji (1881 Directory), being stationed at Wairiki. Shipping records in Melbourne (now held at Laverton) indicate that he was returning from Marseilles to Noumea on the 'Caledonien' on 26 December 1886. After leaving Waikiri he served at Noumea (1892 Directory), Kandavu Island, Fiji, (1898 Directory). This was followed by a brief stay at Hunters Hill, Sydney, the following year. Malo Island was his station in 1903, and according to the 1906-7 Directories he moved on to Port Sandwich in the New Hebrides Vicariate. The death date is recorded as 8 April 1907 and there is a query on the file as to whether or not this occurred in Sydney. Anyhow the age was 70.
