Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 49:

Cleary, John Chrysostom F., CSSR, Irish, Golden Jubilarian
He Trained the First Redemptorists

Although the write-up in the Necrology of the CSSRs by Father William Packer is somewhat unctuous, the reader has to admit that the record, career, and sanctity of this Cleary is most impressive. Born on 27 January 1841 in County Waterford, education and training were received with the Vincentian Fathers at Castleknock, at Bishop Eton, Liverpool, and at Wittem, Holland. Profession took place on 13 November 1861 and Ordination on 1 October 1866. Twenty two years were spent on the English Mission before he came to Australia Dour, unbending as a Novice Master he set high standards in the training of the Redemptorist missioners who preached with rigour and vigour for many years. In turn John Chrysostom was Rector, Novice-Master, and Consultor while stationed at Waratah from 1888 to 1908. Next assignment was at Ballarat where he was Admonitor and on the mission staff. Illness confined him to bed for the last months of life. Death came on 13 November 1917 at the age of 76. A Golden Jubilee had been attained. Burial took place in the Redemptorist plot at the Ballarat New Cemetery.
