Fr David Strong SJ, The Australian dictionary of Jesuit biography 1848-2015, Second Edition, 2017:
Herberg, Anton

Missionary, pastor; born Silesia, Austria, 5 February 1840; died Vienna, 19 January 1914, aged 73.

Anton Herberg entered the Society in Austria, 30 November 1861, aged 20, at St Andrä, and completed his noviciate and rhetoric studies at the same place until 1866. Philosophy followed at Pressburg, 1867-69, and regency as prefect of boarders at Kalksburg, 1870. Theology was at Innsbruck, 1871-73, and tertianship at Prague, 1875. He taught at Linz and Mariaschein, 1874 and 1876, before he left for Australia. Final vows were at Mariaschein, 2 February 1876.

He arrived in Australia on 28 November 1876, and went immediately to Sevenhill, where he was spiritual father and a missionary in the districts of Clare, Undalya, Lower Wakefield, Saddleworth, Montaro and Manoora. He was also a mission consultor and bursar, and superior at Jamestown from 1890. At various times he lectured in moral theology, and taught in the school.

Herberg returned to Austria in 1894 and worked in the tertianship as sub-minister and retreat director. For the next three years he lived at St Andrä, Szatmár (Hungary) and Travnik (Bosnia).

He returned to Adelaide, 3 March 1897, and worked in the parish of Norwood until the following year when he returned to Sevenhill as superior until 1900.

At the end of that year he returned to Europe, and became spiritual father at Laibach in 1901, performing the same duties from 1902-10 at St Andrä. In 1911 he went to Klagenfurt, and finally to Vienna in 1913 until his death from an internal complaint.

His brethren considered him a simple, virtuous, generous and zealous man. He showed great prudence and gave wise advice to people. He showed more than expected joy and patience during his sickness.
