Biographical Notes

Personal, The Argus, Melbourne, 26 July 1929, p 6, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article4024721:

The death of the Rev. Father J.P. O'Connell occurred in a private hospital at Malvern yesterday morning. A throat infection, which was the cause of his death, compelled him to give up active work of the ministry several months ago. The Rev. Father O'Connell was attached for some time to St Ambrose's parish, Brunswick, and was afterwards at St Patrick's Cathedral, where he did useful work and won commendation. When North Brunswick was detached from St Ambrose's, Brunswick, and created a separate parish, he was appointed the first parish priest, and his 14 years' administration there was very successful. He caused St Margaret's Church and school, two fine buildings, to be erected, and the parish in general equipment bears favourable comparison with any other parish in the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Melbourne. The death of Father O'Connell, who was one of the most popular priests in the archdiocese, will be a heavy loss to his Church. Latterly his parish duties at North Brunswick have been carried out by the Rev. Father J. Byrne. The parish school at North Brunswick is conducted by the Sisters of Mercy, and is attended by more than 500 pupils.

Priest Buried in his Church. Requiem at North Brunswick to Father O'Connell, The Sun News-Pictorial, Melbourne, 29 July 1929, p 5, http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article275789701:

A solemn requiem for the late Rev. Father J. P. O’Connell, parish priest at North Brunswick, was held in the parish church on Saturday.

Archbishop Mannix presided, and more than 80 members of the clergy were present.

A funeral procession of the clergy and church and parish organisations was held in the streets around the church buildings.

The burial took place in a grave in front of the pulpit of the church. Archbishop Mannix read the prayers, and the responses were made by the clergy.
