Biographical Notes

Drysdale, South Yarra, St. Kilda, Newport, Vic

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, pp 119-120:

Cusack, John Joseph (Jun), Irish
Little Father Cusack, So Called

Gordon parishioners drew the distinction between the Big and the Little in the Cusacks who, it seems, were cousins. Church directories fail to indicate that the little man who was never stationed in Gordon, but probably he was known to them as a frequent visitor to their parish. John (Jun) was born in Federmore County Limerick in March 1867 (All Hallows records), the son of John and Eileen (nee Gleeson). He was educated at Fr. Downey's private school in Limerick and went to All Hallows in 1885. Ordained on 24 June 1890, he arrived in Melbourne by the 'Oruya' on the 26th of September following. Archbishop Carr kept him on the move and hence the list of places in Directories: Mansfield (1891)(1893), as assistant to Fr. Patrick O'Hanlon; South Yarra (1893)(1896) as assistant to Dean Robert Benson; Brunswick (1897)(1899), as assistant to Fr. Ed. Luby; Castlemaine (1900); Geelong (1901)(1904). In the latter year he was appointed Pastor in charge of Queenscliff and Sorrento. Something went wrong in 1905 or 1906. Hence a return to the curacy at Williamstown (1907); Daylesford for five months in 1907. He then enjoyed for some six years the paternal care of Mgr. Thomas Lynch at St. Kilda East. The final appointment was to the very Irish community at Iona, where the Faith was as deep-rooted as tubers in the nearby fields. Death came to John Joseph, mourned by his friendly cousin, (John J. of Newport) on 18th September 1917. Aged 50. Remains interred in the Priests' Mortuary Chapel, Carlton General Cemetery.
