There was a large attendance of clergy present. The Right Reverend Dr. Goold, Bishop of Melbourne officiated at the altar. His Lordship was assisted in the service by the following clergymen—The Very Reverend Archdeacon McEncroe, the Very Reverend Vicar-General Sheehy, the Very Reverend Prior Sheridan, and the Reverend Dr. Powell, Fathers Garavel, Coll, and England. Father Quirk acting as Deacon, Father Byrne as Sub-Deacon, and Father John Dwyer as Master of the Ceremonies. His Grace the Most Reverend Archbishop Polding, who returned to Sydney during the early part of last week, took no part in the ceremony, but remained during the service in his private chapel in the cathedral. Although the health of his Grace is restored, his medical advisers have recommended a further short retirement before the venerable prelate appears again amongst his flock. The clergymen yesterday ordained were the Rev. Father Fitzpatrick and O'Farrell. It is now two years and a half since an ordination was held in the cathedral. The service did not terminate until past two o'clock. The spacious edifice was densely crowded, by not only members of the Roman Catholic Communion, but of other denominations in the city. |
