Biographical Notes

Fr T.J. Linane, From Abel to Zundolovich, Vol. 2: Biographies of Priests on the Australian Scene up to 1900, 1980, p 16:

Callery, Michael, Irish
An Elusive Quarry

A Michael Callery appears on the Maynooth list of priests (Irish Ecclesiastical Record, Dec. 1967). Michael came from the Diocese of Elphin and was ordained in 1880. A priest of that name is listed in the Lismore Diocese at Casino in 1880. This seems to contradict an Advocate (Melb.) news item of 6 June 1885 that a Michael Callery had arrived recently from Ireland. Certainly he was in the Sale Diocese in 1884, being described as a "preacher of singular ability" (Advocate 11 Oct. 1884). The next month he was stationed at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Melbourne. In June 1885 he turns up on the Cathedral staff at St. Mary's Sydney. The last tracing in the 1895 Directory indicates that he was far away in Greenough Flats, the earliest Mission in the Geraldton region. Once more the trail suddenly ends.

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
Callery, Michael Patrick

Date and place of birth unknown, except that he was born in the diocese of Golphin, Ireland. Details of education unknown. Place of study unknown, but probably Maynooth. Date and place of ordination unknown. It seems he may have been ordained in 1880 for the diocese of Elphin, although a Michael Callery appears on the Maynooth list of priests in Irish Ecclesiastical Record December 1867. The first reference to him in the Australian colonies is in the Sale diocese, when he was described as 'a preacher of singular ability'. He next appears at St Patrick's Cathedral Melbourne, then on the staff at St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney. It appears he was on loan from the Sydney archdiocese from late 1885, being at Palmer's Island, Clarence River, in January 1886. He was at Lismore, according to baptismal records, before 1887, and at Casino in April 1888. It seems he may then have returned to Ireland, being listed in the 1891 Irish Catholic Directory as parish priest, Skyrne, Tara, diocese of Meath. Date and place of death unknown. Place of burial unknown.
