Born 1889 in Armidale, exact date unknown. Educated in Armidale by the Ursulines at their school in the city. Studied at St Patrick's College, Manly. Ordained on 24 April 1911 in Armidale by Bishop P J O'Connor. His first appointments were as assistant priest Gunnedah, then to Bundarra in 1914, where he spent 12 years, being appointed parish priest in 1918 on the death of Joachim Guerrini. In 1926 he was transferred to Werris Creek, remaining in that town until 1944, when transferred to Gunnedah as parish priest, following the death of Daniel Keane. He was created a Domestic Prelate (Monsignor} in April 1949. A brother Patrick McDermott was also a priest of the diocese, and succeeded him as parish priest Werris Creek in 1944. Four sisters were nuns (Ursuline (2), Good Samaritan (1) and Mercy (1)). He died on 15 June 1954 in Gunnedah, and was buried in Gunnedah cemetery.
