T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
Kelly, James Aloysius

Date and place of birth unknown. Details of education unknown. Place of study unknown. Date and place of ordination unknown. He came to the diocese as one of the first group of priests who travelled with Bishop Timothy O'Mahony. He was the first priest appointed to Glen Innes (1871). He remained there until June 1880, when he transferred to Rocky Mouth. While at Glen Innes he began visiting Vegetable Creek (Emmaville) and built the first rough church in the area. Described by Foley as a 'gentle and holy soul, he was the priest who first received P J O'Connor when he arrived in the diocese from Ireland via Brisbane. In early 1883 he was transferred to Lismore to assist William Nugent and Jeremiah J Doyle. In 1885 he was moved again to Kempsey to assist Patrick J McGuinness. In 1886 he retired to Ireland, joined the Cistercians at Mount Melleray and was sent to Durban, South Africa. He died in Durban on 1 February 1912. He is buried in Durban.

Kelly, John

Listed in E J Doody, Acta et Statuta 1951, Appendix VI, Obituary List, in the section headed 'supplementary list of priests who have also worked in the diocese', but with no details other than the period he reputedly worked in the diocese, in this case 1871 to 1899. Everything suggests that this John Kelly is in fact James Kelly. [Died at Durban, South Africa, 1912]

ANZCC note: Middle name Aloysius for the first person listed here is possibly confused with James Aloysius Kelly (1884-1912).
