Biographical Notes

T.W. Campbell, The Priests of the Diocese of Armidale: A Necrology, Braddon ACT, 2005:
McKeon, John Bernard

Born at Attunga, in the Tamworth parish, on 24 March 1917 his schooling was at St Joseph's convent, Manilla, then De La Salle College, Armidale. He studied for the priesthood at St Columba's College, Springwood, and St Patrick's College, Manly, and was ordained in the cathedral at Armidale on 25 July 1944 by Bishop J A Coleman, together with Leonard Henry and Robert Watson. His first appointment was as assistant priest Gunnedah from December 1944. He then served at Tamworth (1947-1950), Narrabri (1951-1955), Warialda (1955), and was appointed as parish priest Walcha from August 1955. In 1967 he was appointed parish priest of Uralla and area Dean, positions he held until illness forced his retirement in November 1975. He was involved with the establishment of the YCW movement in the diocese, originally in Tamworth in 1947, then diocese wide. After retirement he lived for a time in Tamworth with an aunt and niece, then finally at the East Tamworth presbytery. He was regarded by his colleagues as quite a character. He died in the Tamworth Base Hospital on 18 June 1976. He was buried at Uralla.
